Build a better future in the bush

Tradespeople can help build a better future for their families in regional Victoria, according to a group of country-based business leaders.

Champions of the Bush Executive Officer Darren Chester has congratulated Minister John Brumby and the State Government for targeting tradespeople as part of the next phase of the multi-million dollar 'Make it Happen in Provincial Victoria' campaign.

"There is a shortage of skilled workers across a range of industries in rural and regional Victoria," Mr Chester said.

"Champions of the Bush was formed to promote the opportunities to live, work and invest in regional areas. The Make it Happen campaign is helping to raise awareness in metropolitan areas about the great lifestyle we can offer people with appropriate skills to move out of the 'rat race' and enjoy country life.

"If the campaign can help to alleviate some of the shortages of tradespeople, along with other skilled workers in regional centres, it will be money well spent. We urge the government to closely monitor the results and report back to the community on the success of the campaign in the future."

Mr Chester has also urged regional businesses and local councils to build on the government's advertising campaign by helping to promote the virtues of each region.

"This is an opportunity for business people, Councillors and local residents to take up the challenge of being more positive about country life and promoting the opportunities to their city-based colleagues, friends and family members who may be interested in making the move to the country," Mr Chester said.

"The government's advertising campaign is a great start, and we can all help to back it up with a strong 'word of mouth' campaign.

"Let your friends know about the fantastic community life; the more affordable housing; less time commuting to work; and all of the other benefits of country living.

"There are vacancies for skilled workers in a variety of industries throughout provincial Victoria and the new marketing program might spark some renewed interest from qualified people considering a change of lifestyle.

"We all know that life's better in the country and it will be even better if we can help our towns to grow and create more job opportunities for young people in the future."

Mr Chester said Champions of the Bush would continue to lobby State and Federal Governments on the need to invest in the future of regional communities.

"Advertising campaigns are great, but we have to make sure that we meet the expectations of the people when they move to the country with their families," he said.

"Champions of the Bush has been actively encouraging governments at all levels to provide the necessary infrastructure along with good services in areas like health and education to help regional areas to prosper in the future."
