Champions of the Bush and ECG meet at McMillan campus

The Champions of the Bush (COTB) group of companies this week met at the Warragul McMillan campus of Education Central Gippsland (ECG) to discuss the future of leadership training in the region - particularly for younger residents.

The 10 member group of regional Australia companies that champion economic and community development around the nation has been pleased at the support of ECG in their "Youth Leadership Skills Enhancement" project over the past 2 years.

COTB Chairman Richard Rijs said the group was pleased to again return to Gippsland on one of its quarterly visits to regions around the country, and hold discussions with collaborative organisations like ECG.

"We have been impressed by the work done by ECG in relation to our Youth Leadership initiative in Leongatha last year, and were pleased to support ECG's on-going management of the McMillan campus here at Warragul", Mr Rijs said. "We hope to continue with our mutual endeavour together in the future."

The meeting at McMillan was commemorated by the donation of an IBM computer system to ECG CEO Bernadette O'Connor, as part of the project support.

"COTB hopes that the computer will be put to use helping young people in the region to connect with other young leaders via the internet, and communicate their ideas and experiences. It is hoped that young people will be able to network their leadership ideas around Australia and internationally.

"We have been pleased to work with the Community Colleges Victoria around the state, with the support of Regional Development Victoria and influential companies like IBM", Mr Rijs said. "COTB believes that retaining our young people and helping them to acquire community development skills is crucial to the future of country communities."

Bernadette O'Connor thanked the Champions of the Bush for the donation saying it will assist ECG's vision to provide quality resources for young people to develop skills to enter the workforce. "ECG worked with Champions of the Bush in 2007 to trial youth leadership and highly values the partnership and the range of expertise and industries the COTB represents.

Ms O'Connor outlined forward plans of ECG and potential options to extend the youth leadership skills enhancement initiative. The group spoke about infrastructure development, business leadership via entrepreneurship and innovation, and Gippsland issues.
