Country mums urged to spend bonus in the bush

Country mums are being urged to spend their $3000 baby bonus in the bush.

A group of regional business leaders says mums will be helping to create a better future for young people in country towns if they support local traders.

"Obviously it's up to mums to decide what they do with the money but if they are going to spend some of it, we'd love to see them do their shopping in regional Victoria," said Champions of the Bush Executive Officer Darren Chester.

"Every dollar we spend in a country town helps to provide job opportunities for young people in the future.

"If we want our kids to grow up in the country and have the chance to secure good jobs in the future, we've got to support our local businesses whenever possible."

Mr Chester said the $3000 baby bonus should also be viewed as a great marketing opportunity for regional tourism operators.

"If anyone deserves a holiday, it's a new mum," Mr Chester said.

"For many people, the $3000 bonus will be an unexpected windfall and they may be in a position to take a holiday once everything settles down at home.

"It could be a great opportunity for regional tourism operators to make sure that their facilities are well-equipped to cope with young children.

"The family market is very important to regional operators who can offer city people a short break without the huge expense or the hassle of airfares.

"Tourism operators may even consider getting into the spirit of the baby bonus and offering special deals for new mums to enjoy a relaxing break in the country."
