Head to the bush for the long weekend

"The best thing city people can do to help country communities hit by drought and fires is to visit this weekend" -that's the message from independent lobby group, Champions of the Bush.

Executive Officer Darren Chester said many country communities throughout Australia had experienced a tough time with seasonal conditions but would be rolling out the welcome mat for this long weekend.

"We are certainly open for business," Mr Chester said.

"It's easy to forget sometimes that when farmers are having a bad run, it flows on to the small businesses like shops and restaurants in country towns," Mr Chester said.

"It's always great to see city people chipping in to fundraising appeals for fire or drought reliefÉ but the best thing they could do this weekend is jump in the car and visit a country town and spend a few dollars".

"There are some outstanding attractions to discover in rural areas throughout Australia. Along with seeing some more of the country, they will be helping local businesses to employ local kids and provide a real boost to the town they visit".

"Our message is simple, get away from the stresses of city life and enjoy a country break this long weekend."
