14 July 2003 Patties leads the way The decision by Patties Bakery to purchase Four 'n Twenty pies will encourage the business community to take a second look at investing in country towns, according to a leading regional lobby group. Champions of the Bush Executive Officer Darren Chester says the decision is further proof that major businesses can succeed in rural locations. "It sends a message to the business community that you don't have to be in the suburbs to run a good business and in fact, there are many reasons why you should look at rural and regional locations," Mr Chester said. "In addition to cheaper land and establishment costs, there is the availability of a more stable workforce and easy access to quality primary products". "Patties decision to acquire the Simplot's bakery division is a shot-in-the-arm to regional Victoria and a great sign of confidence in the future of East Gippsland in particular." Champions of the Bush Chairman John Brown, from Brown Bros wines said the broader community would welcome the news that an icon Australian brand like Four 'n Twenty was returning to local hands. "This is a great success story about the little family cake shop that became a multi-million dollar family business and we should celebrate the success of Patties Bakery," Mr Brown said. "The Rijs family has worked hard and managed an extraordinary expansion program with the assistance of their dedicated staff". "There's a lesson here for governments that doing business in the bush is profitable and we must be investing in the essential infrastructure to encourage sustainable economic growth in the future." Under the acquisition, up to 100 new jobs are expected to be created at Patties Bairnsdale factory. Media information: For further comments contact Darren Chester on 0351 55 3719 or 0412 153 719.
