Prime Minister gives boost to local industry

A group of regional business leaders has welcomed today's funding announcements in Gippsland by Prime Minister John Howard.

Champions of the Bush says the funding for Vegco and Top Crop near Bairnsdale will help to create jobs and long term growth opportunities in the region.

Executive Officer Darren Chester says the organisation welcomes the push towards working in partnership with businesses and local communities to generate jobs.

"While the grants are great news for the individual businesses and organisations involved, it's even better news for the East Gippsland community," Mr Chester said.

"The new investment will help to create jobs and support the long term prosperity of the region. In recent times, both the State and Federal Government have shown a willingness to work with the business community to support innovative projects and new developments.

"Supporting the expansion plans of businesses with a proven track record of success is a great way to boost the regional economy. The businesses involved often spend twice as much of their own money on these projects but the extra government funding is always welcomed."

Mr Chester said Champions of the Bush was determined to keep working with MPs from both sides of politics to help promote regional areas as a great place to live, work and invest.

"We need to keep encouraging all levels of government to invest in the future of regional communities with quality infrastructure particularly in areas like health, education, transport and communications," he said.

"Quality services are an essential part of the equation when it comes to attracting new residents and stimulating growth in the business community. In recent times we have seen the State Government's $1.3 million 'Make it Happen' marketing campaign along with our own 'Back to the Bush' project which helped to raise awareness about the benefits of living and working in regional areas.

"We need to build on those programs with on-the-ground initiatives like the Vegco and Top Crop projects that help to create economic growth and job opportunities, particularly for young people."
