Young Speakers to energise South Gippsland

Monday September 10th will be a night to remember in Leongatha as Education Central Gippsland and Champions of the Bush bring inspirational speakers to South Gippsland for an Leadership Oration night, starting at 7pm in the Town Hall.

The first of the motivational speakers will be Dr Matthew Bateman, who is a former amateur Boxing champion & Olympic Coach, practising Chiropractor, author, and Life Skills coach & educator for young people. In addition to being a partner in a busy Melbourne chiropractic practice with a former "Victorian Young Business Woman of the Year" (Dr Bridie Cullinane), Dr Matt runs a student skills organisation called "VCEhelp". They believe that one of the keys to a successful and rewarding life is "life balance" and "health for energy". Their firm "Peak Potential" promotes motivation via well-being, and offers young people ideas on how to cope with the pressures and anxiety of early life.

The second speaker will be Glenn Manton. A senior AFL footballer for both Carlton and Essendon for 12 years, and a member of the AFL's 200 Club, Glenn Manton is clearly not your average athlete. Perhaps he is equally known in the community for his work with various charities.

He holds a degree in Education and has written a best-selling semi-autobiography, continually proving that he is more than an athlete. He has lived in the villages of the Tiwi Islands and the favilas of Rio, has an extraordinary knowledge of the world around him and a truly unexpected story to tell. Glenn is someone capable of honesty, compassion and human frailty. He played 178 games for the Essendon and Carlton football clubs and was a member of the 1995 Carlton Premiership team.

In 1999, he co-founded Whitelion, a no-profit organisation aiding youth in crisis in the juvenile justice system. He has a diverse media background in print, radio and television and has appeared on everything from the Footy Show (Channel 9) to 3RRR and is now a regular on a number of Foxtel sports shows. Glenn continues to travel throughout Australia as both an ambassador for Whitelion and as a much sought-after speaker by corporations and educational institutions alike. He is entertaining and inspiring.

Youth Leadership is about being motivated to want to make a difference in the community, and Dr Matt advocates a healthy lifestyle to have the energy and enthusiasm to face life's challenges. He will offer some tips learnt through his Olympic training to become a champion Boxer, which may be beneficial to the young people of South Gippsland to help organise their endeavour and sharpen their focus upon what they want to achieve.

The convenor of Champions of the Bush Geoffrey Carruthers said today that the speakers that they are bringing to Leongatha are eminent Australians who are motivated to make a difference. "We are pleased to be working with the Education Central Gippsland and the local community to raise the profile of Leadership aspiration, and assist in ways that will establish lasting benefit for the next generation of Leaders in South Gippsland".

"Champions of the Bush" is a group of regionally based companies that is "championing" rural communities, and wants to help enhance the skills of our future leaders, and create closer relationships via community development. The Leadership Oration evening is part of a state-wide initiative in conjunction with Centres for Adult Education, and supported by Regional Development Victoria, to bring recognised Leaders to provincial towns to speak about their experiences.

The Leadership Oration on 10th September is free, and open to all members of the community.

The project coordinator David Lane (5622 6000) is receiving registrations for attendance to ensure all people can be accommodated, in what promises to be an interesting evening at the Leongatha Town Hall for young and old.
